• The most common sign of a drywood termite infestation is their frass. Unlike subterranean termites who use frass for nests, drywood termites push frass out. Frass can appear in piles near the infestation and often looks like sawdust.

Subterranean Termites

• Worker drywood termites and subterranean termites look similar but differ in soldier and alate castes. Soldier subterranean termites have large, yellowish/brown heads and the flying termites (alates) are usually a dark brown/black coloring.
• They need a source of water to survive and thus usually live in soil. They need a connection to the ground to keep their nest and tunnels humid enough to survive and build tunnels and nests.
• Mud tubes are the top sign of subterranean termites. A mixture of soil, wood, saliva and feces, they are dark brown and can often be found along the foundations of a property as well as along floor joints inside the building.

This includes ensuring your yard has good drainage, fixing leaky pipes promptly, and generally being cautious of areas where your property is in contact with soil.
