Tap Insulation: Smarter Pest Control

In Pest Control, Pest Control Tips, Pest Prevention

There are things you can do to dissuade pests from taking up residence in your home. You can clean dishes, seal and secure your trash and dry foods – even go around the outside of yourtermites mobbing a wood structure property and seal every crack you find. These are precautions we suggest all homeowners in Central FL take for their household but is it enough? What if there was an additional protective barrier you could have that would stay constantly vigilant, allowing you to enjoy the things in life that really matter? You can find that bodyguard in TAP® Insulation, a revolutionary insulating material that happens to be a specialty of Heron Home & Outdoor. It’s not the only insulation we offer, but if you’re looking for a quality insulator that can also act as a perpetual pest killer, it’s something you should definitely consider.

What is TAP® Insulation?

TAP Insulation is made up of loose-fill cellulose that is blown into wall voids for new constructions, or attics over existing insulation. The merits are right in its name: TAP stands for Thermal, Acoustical, Pest Control Insulation. So it does everything you’d expect from insulation, with the added benefit of killing a variety of insect pests. But how does it do that? The secret is in the scraps of cellulose themselves, which are treated with a layer of Boric acid.

Boric acid is a naturally occurring mineral that, on its own, is not enough to seriously harm pets, children, or adults unless ingested in large quantities. It’s meant to target smaller, insect pests, ranging from Formosan termites to roaches and beetles. When they come into contact with TAP Insulation, it coats their bodies with the mineral. Boric acid then gets into their system when they groom themselves or each other. Insects are unable to pass it, and eventually, it results in them dying of dehydration or malnutrition. And just like that, you’ve stopped a potential infestation without doing a thing.

Benefits of TAP® Insulation

There’s a lot to love about TAP Insulation. It’s easy to install, and once the material has settled it remains active for decades, up to 100 years in ideal conditions. You’ll have a constant layer of pest defense as long as you can control the moisture levels in your attic. But TAP is more than just a pest killer, it’s also very effective insulation, leaving you cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. And, while it doesn’t quite have the R-value of spray foam insulation, it has a higher rating than fiberglass and is more effective at blocking outside noise.

Its most appealing, non-pest-related quality, is probably how eco-forward it is. The cellulose is made from 80% recycled materials, and by relying on TAP insulation you’re keeping other, less biodegradable materials from ending up in the landfill. You’ll lower your monthly HVAC bill because your A/C and furnace or heat pump will use less energy. All of these benefits are accessible to any homeowner in Central FL, and the team at Heron Home & Outdoor is ready to help make them happen.
