Wildlife Prevention Tips

While Heron will gladly assess and remove many of the animals that can threaten your property, the best approach is prevention. Unfortunately, every animal has its own likes, dislikes, strengths, and weaknesses, so there’s no one-size-fits-all approach for keeping them out of your home. But there are still many things that you can do to minimize your risk for wildlife intrusion, regardless of the species.

Few things are more inviting to wildlife, particularly in inclement weather, than a warm, dark place. You can help keep animals out by securing your home:

  • Look for any holes, cracks, crevices, or other weaknesses that animals could possibly exploit.
    • Don’t overlook tiny issues; no hole is too small to be a potential problem.
    • Check that all doors and windows close properly with no gaps.
    • Pay close attention to your foundation, roof, or eaves (where the roof meets the wall), as these are common points of entry.
    • If you have elevated structures like decks or porches, make sure the undersides are secure and able to keep wildlife out.
    • If you have a chimney, consider installing a cap.
  • Secure food sources. Aside from shelter, animals are routinely drawn to our properties in search of food.
    • Properly secure all trash cans, bins, or dumpsters, especially if they contain food waste. Use tight-fitting lids and, if possible, keep the containers in an enclosed area until they’re ready to be emptied.
    • Clean up all food waste after any outdoor functions. Do not leave food out or throw it out in unsecured containers.
    • Do not feed local wildlife, such as deer, even if they seem harmless. The more animals learn that your property is the source of a free meal, the more they’ll try to move in.
    • If you have livestock, keep them in secure pens.
  • Eliminate clutter or potential habitats.
    • Remove standing water or any piles of debris. If you keep firewood, do not leave it outside to get damp.
    • Regularly trim trees, branches, and shrubs away from your house to make it harder for tree climbers like squirrels and opossums to use them as stepping stones into your house.
    • Establish property boundaries: For some threats, like armadillos, you may want to consider installing a fence around your property as an extra level of protection.

Heron and Wildlife Prevention

In spite of all your hard work, wildlife can still find ways to invade your property. Your best defense is to regularly inspect your home and other structures like sheds, garages, etc. Don’t wait until you might have a problem; make this inspection part of your routine maintenance. If you suspect an animal presence—either through signs of damage or strange noises—contact us immediately for removal.
